Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated to traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989). The EMDR therapy in England and worldwide is a well know treatment that facilitates the accessing and processing of the traumatic memories and/or other adverse life experiences to bring these to an adaptive resolution. This will help to relieve the affective distress, to reformulate the negative belief and to reduce psychological arousal.
People who have experiencied primary or secondary trauma can access EMDR. This treatment is divided into eight-phase protocol where the eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used during one part of the session. Unlike talking therapy, the client will gain insight from the EMDR therapy by his own intellectual and emotional processing, rather than the therapist’s interpretation and/or formulation.
